Like most other communities at the time this town (actually known as Dennis) was served by the Cape and Vineyard Electric Company. They utilized a lot of neat construction in their day (until purchased by the Commonwealth Electric Company in the 1970s). And I have LOTS of fond memories of what stood as we went to local beaches in the vicinity in the 1960s ;-) Old examples include three-spool crossarm secondary drop brackets made by Hubbard, steel pins that were tightly hammered into their crossarms without the use of bolts (thus "threadless bottomed pins"; small Pyrex distribution insulators (notably the CD 233, 234 and 235), a wide scattering of Ohio Brass porcelain "hat" insulators, etc. Some of this old stuff remains where the existing utility (NStar Electric) has kept distribution at 4kv primary.. which is not a real lot. It is really neat seeing what remains of this old pole line architecture on Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard despite the many bad coastal storms and hurricanes these pole lines survived and endured, still standing, since they were built in the 1940s and earlier. The mercury vapor street lights seen were made by GE and installed not long before this picture was taken. Can't you just hear the very popular radio hits from convertibles driving by with 1963 hits such as Martha Reeve and The Vandellas: "Heatwave" and "Quicksand" (released shortly afterward, in November 1963) ... ;-) |
