The two rectangular items on the upper crossarm probably were cast iron lightning arrestors or switches (if the latter possibly with fuses inside of them) for transformer protection.

Customer services in the early days were openwire from the pole to the house. If you look closely on the right there are two insulator brackets near the peak of both buildings. Often such very early wiring led to the utility electric meter in the attic or upper room of the customer's premises. By the teens standardization across the United States with strict electric wiring methods promoted overall safer practices/codes including conduit-enclosed service wiring to lower levels (often in basements or first floor areas) where customer fuse panels were installed along with the utility meter(s).
