The lights used within this series streelighting loop were incandescent. Note the single wire atop the pole which had a deadend on each side for the two wires that led to the lamp.

Interesting note! A local gent who is 90 years young, very spry and with a forever love and pride for his linework from 1952 to 1995 told me a number of cool stories from his many years of working in the field. He did not work for any specific utility but for a line-construction-maintenance contractor that was popular here in the Northeast.

Among his favorite stories was how linemen who had to sometimes work on Sundays (or during overnight hours) when liquor stores were closed employed "gumball" street lights like this one as "nip stashers". Because any kind of booze wasn't allowed on the truck when needed (such as in freezing stormy weather) these little nips were safely placed inside the fixture when it was impossible to get a pinch anywhere else. The heat from the street lamp lightbulb kept the remedy from freezing...all you had to do is recall which street lamp your stash was in when you needed it!
