Either or both could have been for telephone comms. If not both then the other line likely was for local electric lighting service customers in this New York State village. Residential and rural lower voltage electric lighting wires sometimes appeared a lot like their telephone subscriber counterparts around the turn of the century since smaller insulators were often used along with lighter-duty crossarms, thinner wire, etc. Further, there weren't many (if any) utility construction standards for backroads lines in those days. The smaller utility company ops (especially the Ma-and Pa ones) used whatever was economically available as long as it did the job... |
