Pole hung up in the trees, you may see two side brackets on the pole top (View Original). This was a single pair of open wire left up above the cables, called a "talk circuit". Line construction crews and splicers working along the line could "clip in" on the wire with their portable "butt" telephone set, and talk with repeater offices or others working up/down the line.
