Many of us collect old signs to go with our insulator collections. I have many signs in my collection, but this one has to be my favorite! These are very hard to find and very desirable because of the subject matter. The sign was made by the Veribrite sign Company in Chicago probably in the 1920's or 30's. I'm thinking the initials on the bottom stand for American Steel and Wire Company? I'm not sure if the sign was made for the steel company or maybe distributed by them? A. S. and W. Co is infamously known for the Donora Smog of 1948. Between October 26, and October 31, 1948 an air inversion trapped industrial air pollution from the American Steel and Wire plant and Donora Zinc Works. "In three days, 20 people died... After the inversion lifted, another 50 died. I'm interested in learning more about the sign if anyone can tell me more about it. |
