Quite interesting construction that came about in the early days of the telegraph for stringing wires from building to building especially atop city buildings. This practice continued for decades later...for some urban installations as well as rural ones like we see here. In some instances "sawhorse" construction was used. This similar method utilized a pair of angled supports on each side of the crossarm (mounted on top) for strength.
