Atop the pole line on the left are two-pin crossarms for fire alarm telegraph connections. It was commonplace up until around 1910 to place such critical and potentially life-saving wires on top of utility poles so that they would be at an ultimately safe distance from any other wires. Thus without any chance of any other wiring falling upon them that could cause disruption of a community's fire alarm telegraph call box communication system. Beneath are telephone openwire circuits and towards the right are what appear to be electric lighting service lines. Note the "pencil-topped" electric pole in the foreground ;-) |
