Allis-Chalmers generator added to the original 1899 powerhouse. this power plant was originally built in 1899 by a local company, transferred to GA Power in 1927, then transferred to the Toccoa Falls Institution in 1933. Dam and powerhouse upgrades were made in the late thirties, early forty then the power plant shut down in disrepair in 1957. GA Power deemed the plant historic in 1972. In 1977, the earthen dam broke above the falls and washed out through the college. 39 people died in the dark event and the power plant hasn't been touched since.
