This historic Maine coastal community has had its own electric lighting department since 1894 (Kennebunk Light & Power District) and is one of only a handful of Maine communities served by Public Power. As with the latter... nationwide, Kennebunk's approximately 4,000 customers enjoy electric rates considerably lower compared their neighboring investor-owned customers serving much of the rest of the state. In addition, their smaller size allows the Kennebunk utility to quickly restore outages, etc.. Kennebunk is about half-way between Portland, ME and the State Line in Kittery (altogether about a 45 minute drive along the coast).

Photo taken along US 1. Hurricanes during 1938, 1954 and 1960 helped to take most of these tall trees down.
