This narrow roadway from the 1800s was once illuminated by incandescent street lights of an interesting flat-bottomed "gumball" globe design.

Very probably this street like in many other Boston neighborhoods of the day originally were paved with cobblestones. Typically asphalt covered over a lot of them in later decades.
