The latter were owned by the Central Maine Power Company in this coastal Maine community...about halfway between Portland and the NH state border. These "acorn" street lights that graced this community were incandescent ones. Many of these nice lights along with their brackets were still in service throughout their service territory until the early-to-mid 1980s. During that time these lights were removed (scrapped) in favor of the "new" high pressure sodium street lights. Nowadays reproduction luminaires with similar brackets and fixtures have become very popular (and expensive) in North America with energy-efficient light sources built within them. Photo believed to have been taken along (or near US 1). Note that cool double-decker bus! Like a lot of other pole line archicture, these lights were designed to last many decades. The ones you see here were pretty much new at the time.... |
