The latter was the old 6-pin tall pole line seen on the left. This main line communications line between Boston and Albany, NY (with circuits expanding elsewhere) was rebuilt soon after this picture was taken utilizing 10-pin crossarms and hard-core solid copper wire (superceding the former iron wires).

Sections of the early teens upgrade stood until the 1980s from Boston to Albany along this RR route.
