Good looking pole that might have been oil soaked since it sorta has that dark appearance. On the left is another phone line. That one has paired cable, lead-covered. Perhaps the latter was for local subscribers and the openwire route on the right for toll circuits. Also note the wooden pole steps on the open wire pole. Those were installed instead of metal ones so passers-by would not get (as badly) injured as the blunt metal ones that started around eight feet up. I recall these wooden steps as a kid, albeit they were pretty uncommon. I know of an old, in-service pole here in my home town with them although they are pretty much rotted away. It was an unexpected find to see them. My sighting was while returning from a typical yard sale walking back to my car, giving what remains of the steps a second look... ============ |
