Here we see a very nice example of what some of the earliest electric lighting distribution transformers and line construction looked like (from the 1890s through about the early teens). Transformers like the one you see here provided 110 volt service to customers via two 1,100 or 2,220 volt primary leads that went into them... from the nearest central station. The transformers were fused for protection. Porcelain-bodied disconnects or cutouts (not very clearly seen here) were employed with a fuse wire within them, affixed to a separate porcelain handle that inserted into the bottom of them, mounted on the pole's crossarm. |
