Common CD number, common manufacturer, somewhat common colour... and yet there has been some discussion recently about just how scarce this seemingly mundane Brookfield piece actually is. Understandably so, as this style seems to be among the rarest of the "common Brookfields", with probably no more than a couple dozen examples known. This piece is the [040] BROOKFIELD CD 145 with sharp drip points, an '8' on the dome top (I'm told all known examples in this embossing style occur with this same '8'), and in a characteristic dark green colouration. This particular example has what appears to be a short, 3/8" piece of braided metal wire or chain right behind the rear wire groove, as well as a couple sizable chunks of potstone and some milky goobers throughout the rear crown and skirt. Fortunately for me, the area I live in is one of the very few areas which used this unusual style, so from time to time one turns up. The initial discovery occured as a group of about 10 or so were found still on poles along a local section of the Canadian Pacific Railway not far from London, ON. After that a couple more appeared in small collections and antique shops in the same area. This example is the most recent I've seen come to light. Unfortunately, the condition is not good on this one, but it's probably the best you'll see available for purchase in the near future. This one has a 2" long flat skirt chip on the front base which removes all of the drips it is adjacent to. As well, there are 1/2" and 5/8" skirt chips on the rear base. There is a 1/2" flake off the rear upper wire ridge (right over the metal object), about 10 partially chipped drips (of what few are left), and a few scattered 1/16" fleabites here and there. There is also a 34" lehr kiss on the right side of the crown, immediately above the wire ridge. After all the glaring damage, the lehr kiss (which is factory "damage") is hardly worth worrying about. Not the best of shape, but a scarce or, dare I say, rare insulator style which will fill the gap and tell a story before a better, cleaner, shinier one comes along to take its place. I'm asking $30.00 US plus shipping for this one. I accept PayPal, or personal cheque from any member of ICON or any collector with whom I have dealt before. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more photos, and look through my other items or unsold sales stock to combine shipping on items. All the best! |
