1872 Knight's "American Mechanical Dictionary" entry under "Insulators". They show some nice hook examples (though what they call a "Varley" looks a lot like a "Brooks") but it would have been nice to see other types as well. On the following page are just more examples of what substances constitute an insulator and a list of these can be found in any dictionary worthy of the deffinition.
