The forementioned insulators are along the upper crossarm of the pole line in the distance and faithfully served their purpose for a long time. For at least 10 miles along US Route 1 in southern Maine three-skirted Lapp pintype insulators were upon Central Maine Power Company's primary circuits from Wells through Ogunquit. These are coastal communities and undoubtedly the utility wanted to use them to provide better electric insulation from the salt-spray from the ocean, less than a mile away. This line was upgraded to 13kv in the early 1990s. Some of these insulators were recovered and they are prominently dated with their Lapp handstamp, dated from 1930 to 1932 or so. Almost all were bottom rest in beautiful shades of mahogany. I will add their proper U-number to this script as soon as I affirm it... BTW a major north-south AT&T connection between Boston, MA and Portland, ME extended along the other side of this roadway. It was an impressive openwire line built around 1900 and remained in service until the 30s. The subesquent line was a heavy aerial lead-sheathed cable that pararelled it a bit more towards the coastline. |
