On the far left is an electric lighting service pole with a distrubution transformer upon it. Atop the same pole probably are fire alarm telegraph wires. The latter were mounted on tops of poles in the earliest days, above all other wires, so that nothing could physically interfere with them since they provided vital communication between community call boxes and the local fire station. Commencing around the teens, fire alarm circuits were mounted at lower positions along pole lines especially during utility line rebuilds that were commonplace then, owing to the increasing popularity of the telephone and electric service ...along with standardized construction with sturdier (than previous), higher capacity lines. A ten-pin telephone openwire line stands on a separate pole on the same side of this street. |
