A "gin pole" as seen attached to the topmost crossarm was frequently used by electric utilities to hoist up transformers and other heavy poletop gear into position. This rope-and-pulley method was used for many years until bucket trucks replaced a lot of this kind of heavy-sweat labor. And that wasn't until the 1960s or so.
