Such crossarm construction extended over roadways have been used for clearance from foliage that would otherwise interfere with communications and other electric utility line circuits.

The nickname "alley arm" probably originates from the fact that extended crossarms have been being used through narrow city alleys where clearance is limited, thus such crossarms for stringing wires.
