A telephone open wire line with 10 crossarms with ten insulators on each graced the left side of this main thorofare through Springfield just before the turn of the century (1900). An electric lighting service pole is also viewed on the right. An old spanwire arc street light suspended over the centre of this rather busy intersection. Severe ice storms around 1908 wreaked a lot of havoc throughout the state, bringing down plenty of trees and open wire lines. After that time a lot of rebuilding consisted of paired cable and placing utility routes underground, especially through downtown areas. Added note: Maybe a just a couple of the many hundreds of insulators within this image will appear at the Springfield, Ohio Insulator Show this weekend? |
