It is quite possible Southern Massachusetts Telephone Company had operations at one time in this community since New England Telephone specified to me (in 1969) that "Portsmouth" was among the SMT&T Co. exchanges they bought out. I never found out if "Portsmouth" was in NH or RI. The latter is much closer to Massachusetts so I have always assumed Portsmouth, RI was one of many SMT&T Co. communities that existed here in southeastern MA.
