Seen in the foreground is a wooden junction box for connecting open wire circuits to bundled paired-cable that led directly to the telegrapher's office within the railroad station you see here. This construction practice was commonplace for many years among telegraph companies.

I believe this photo was taken along one of the Rock Island Railroad routes.
