The street light fixtures in this photo were made by GE and rated at 1000 watts. More energy-efficient light sources (high pressure sodium, notably) introduced for street lighting in the late 1960s were twice as energy-efficient as the mercury vapor ones and purportedly these lightbulbs were supposed to last just as long... The luminaires seen along with local electric distribution lines are uncommon nowadays since these big mercury vapor ones are "dinosoars" and the more efficient ones that have replaced them are a lot smaller and use a lot less electricity.
