This image says it all. Events like this really got the Bell System, Western Electric and other telephone-cable suppliers into full gear into producing paired-covered cable which was much more relistant to the really nasty forces of nature.

Paired-cable eventually became rather common especially for new lines, subscriber upgrade routes and repairs.

PS...And this is one *more* example why a lot of the insulators we now own are NOT in mint condition ;-)
