The enclosed-type arc light shown is of a then-newer type and these became commonmplace starting in the late 1890s. It was more energy efficient and required less maintenance than the open-type arc fixture that likely was once here. Those had a cone-shaped metal shroud above them for weather protection. In some upgraded installations such as this one, this "protector" was retained.
