Here's Tom Nugent, with multiple tables of AT&T tools, sections of cable, and behind him, tables of insulators and other AT&T ephemera, plus lots of candy for the kids. Tom is one of the folks who expanded his offerings when some of the others cancelled out at the last minute. He told me that he made several trips from his home in Ottawa to load up his tables. From Tom I finally scored that chunk of L4-5 coaxial cable that I have been wanting for nearly 40 years. Back in the early '70s I saw a paper weight, made from a segment of AT&T's L-carrier cable, on the desk of a lawyer who had helped negotiate the easements for AT&T's underground coaxial cable system. This was planned to be the fallback communication system to help the USA deal with the Red Menace during the Cold War. How far we have come since then, and how much we owe to the folks who designed, built, and maintained these systems! |
