Also note the two-wire open wire electric service leading to this building on the upper right. This sort of service drop with electric utilities was pretty much commonplace until the 1930s when covered cable (with two or three wires inside) became standard. These cables had rubber insulation around their wiring and were externally sheathed with a strong cloth-like fabric.
