I believe the Edison Electric Illuminating Company of Boston was the electric utility at this location (a suburb a few miles north of Boston). This company operated in numerous other Boston area communities and became the Boston Edision Company in 1938. Shown is typical electric line construction of the 1920's. An enclosed-type arc light on a mast arm also is seen. The white-painted crossarms atop the pole on the right most likely were fire alarm circuits. It was commonplace for Fire Departments in Massachusetts (and likely elsewhere) to paint their crossarms either red or white. Many had "Fire Alarm" stenciled onto them for identification. This poletop practice was pretty much changed to lower locations on utility poles, so this must be a later example. |
