Windham, ME 1912, Rural Telephone and Transmission Lines

The phone openwire lines (on the right, only) were getting quite old when this photo was taken since Ma Bell and others were converting to 10-pin crossarm construction to accomodate additional customers. Also, their older six-pin crossarms and pine (untreated) poles were deteriorating having experienced the tough New England four seasons during the then-previous 10 to 20 years.

On the left is a power distribution line which appears to be a double circuit one with small multipart insulators. Maine has always been known for its hydroelectric capacity and no doubt this line furnished light and power to many in this locale.
