This is one of just a few remaining clues of a long gone line. Single wire ground return phone lines were obsolete by 1900 on any serious phone company leads. The poor grounding caused poor sound quality and echo, many time referred to in old literature as sounding like you were talking to someone at the bottom of a well. That did not keep private owners and farmer lines from continuing the practice though.
