As shown, this portion of open wire line ran along Route 1 in southern Maine and was built in the 1890s. It was a vital AT&T telephone connection between Portland, ME with Boston, MA and the rest of the AT&T network. It is also known that this line extended northward from Portland to other Maine communities. By the early 1930s AT&T's this coastal long distance line (at least in southern Maine) was replaced by a lead-covered twisted pair cable which connected the same corridor and other points as well. Some of the latter was aerial while the rest of it was placed underground. |
