Up for sale is a great old crude Brookfield CD 164 which originated from the city of London, Ontario along one of its many low-voltage side street distribution lines. The early suburbs of London were once full of glass like these, though much of it has since disappeared. You've probably seen me posted these for sale before, but I only have a limited number of them (as most of the copper wire is salvaged by the city), and I just love the look of the super heavy open-wire copper that used to be up in the air here. The line wire on these pieces is probably No. 2 guage, and is around 1/4" thick. The tie wires are even 1/8" copper! You ought to see the big old coils of wire that were taken out of use along with these insulators. In the case of this particular example, the insulator itself is even pretty neat. It's a [030] Brookfield CD 164, with all sorts of gunk in the glass. This is a generally crude insulator. The piece is filled with thousands of micro-bubbles, angular chunks of fire brick, an odd, black-coloured glob of something in the rear skirt just to the right of "YORK", and a nice glob of something completely different in the rear crown. All in all, this is a seriously crude piece with a LOT of character even when not considering that heavy old wire.

The condition of the piece is alright, though it looks like when the linemen cut the pole down, the tension of the wire on the insulators may have caused a large chip on the front upper wire ridge. The chip is about 1" wide, and though partly hidden by the tie wire is still an eye sore. It's too bad as almost none of these pieces came off the line in VNM condition - most of them had chips similar to this one. Most were still VNM while up on the poles, though.

I'm now asking $16.00 U.S. plus shipping for this great old tie-wired hunk of Brookfield glass. Please feel free to contact me for additional photos. I accept PayPal, money orders or bank cheques, or personal cheques from any member of ICON, or anyone I have dealt with before. Please feel free to look through my previously unsold items in the "For Sale (Not Sold)" folder, and combine purchases to save on shipping.
