This community is adjacent to New Bedford, MA. Photo was taken somewhere near the shoreline, likely on a short bridge. This photo is an example of the early use of crossarm braces which I believe came into popular use by the late 1890s. This replaced the former method of attaching crossarms to poles simply via two lag screws, set into a "gain" or cut in the pole to "fit" the crossarm. Crossarm braces were also used with lag-type crossarm attachments until around 1910. Single through-bolts for securing crossarms also started to become popular construction by the late 1890s or so. |
