Here is a pole located in Cannon Beach, Oregon still in service in 1981 as a U. S. Coast Guard defense line (DBR). It was built from Crescent City, CA. all the way along the coast to Port Angeles, WA. in 1941, just in time for World War 2. The two pairs on clear glass CD 155 insulators might look like an ordinary phone line and indeed, as in this photo, the telephone and TV cable companies were allowed to use the poles, but those open wire lines were carrying important military information. It was taken down not long after this, possibly late 1980's and the poles now still remain as telephone/tv poles. What's going on under the wires? I was working with a crew loading this old wooden railroad car to a museum. |
