I took this photo from in front of my former house in the Sellwood district of Portland, OR. around 1980. The Portland General Electric crew is removing the long 11,000 volt delta (phase to phase) power line from the pole tops and cutting the poles shorter, leaving the 12,500 volt line below it in place. The 11,000 volt line dated back to the days when the railroad was an electric powered interurban trolley line. By the 1980's it was just serving some scattered industrial customers and Oaks Park, a large amusement park down the line. All those were just as well served by the 12,500 volt line as they are today. |
