Northampton, MA 1907, Pole Line with Fire Alarm on Top

It was general practice to place fire alarm circuits atop utility poles until around the teens...at least here in the northeast. I believe the reason was so that these wires could be physically and electrically protected from any other wires, all of which obviously were beneath. The lines seen below on longer crossarms likely were for electric light service.
