A stretch of new power line built by Tillamook, OR. P.U.D. showing the newly adopted "bird proof" construction specification. A 10 foot arm is used mounted lower than the pole top to allow 60 inches between the phase wires. This formation is catching on with other power utilities I have noticed also such as Pacific Power, PG&E, Consumers Power Inc. and many others. Part of the effort to save the large birds from electric shock. In my area a bald eagle took a 24.9 kV phase to phase hit and died, setting off a wave of protest by local wildlife enthusiasts. It's funny that this had been going on since the beginning of closely space power wires, since what, the 1890's? and nobody seemed to care until now!

UPDATE.....OK, several people are wondering. What is that huge building to the right sitting in the middle of the dairy pastures? Answer: A former WW 2, U.S. Navy blimp hangar, now used as an airplane museum.
