Those heavier cables most likely were for DC service which Edison Electric (Boston) offered for many years...even through the 90s for maintaining separate services for older elevators! FYI...Boston Edison had about 500 direct-current accounts as of 1985 as I learned (from them) while in meter school. All were for elevator operation "grandfathered" among their rates.
