Kern River Line

Yes, these historic, 60-foot towers are still in service! This is a shot looking south on Tower Line Road (that really is the name) from California Hwy 223. In the distance, are the Tehachapi Mountains of the Grapevine Grade. Unfortunately though, the old, gray M-4800 multiparts are long gone—replaced back in the 1920's, by these more-reliable suspension strings, which could carry much larger conductors. Still, it appears that, from the length of the strings, the line was kept at its original 75kv. Or, over the years, has it been scaled back to Southern California Edison's more typical, 66kv? Photo is from a slide taken back in 1998. Even so, those towers are still there.
