A busy main street in Coos Bay, Oregon circa 1947. The street was actually Oregon Coast Highway 101 but today 101 is (luckily) bypassed 1 street over. The power line on the right, with the myriad of wires belonged to Mountain States Power Co. The line on top was a long 22,000 volt line from the MSP steam plant nearby to Coquille, OR. The dual circuit 2300 volt lines below with 6 insulators make the line look even busier! MSP was always full of 'tricks' like the 3 wire secondary raised high on the pole near the 2300 to reach over a building roof! Secondary and street light wires are carried on the bottom arm. There is even a "festoon" light wire, high foreground, with sockets and bulbs. Across the street are two ring cables of the West Coast Telephone Co. But once south out of the city center, it turned into a long line 5 crossarm open wire spectacular! A nice array of old vehicles and signs and just how things looked when I was a wee lad! The large Egyptian sign is a theater and the tallest bldg. in CB (10 strories!) is the Tioga Hotel with sign barely visible. Both exist today. A clue to the town's former name is found on the sign just above the GMC Texaco truck in far left, Marshfield Electric. Since the town of Marshfield was situated on Coos Bay itself, the town was finally and logically named Coos Bay. Today Coos Bay, North Bend and Empire form the largest population center on the Southern Oregon Coast. MSP power is now Pacific Power and West Coast Tel. became part of General System and is now Verizon land line. Most of the buildings in this pic still exist but compared to this scene, it's a total makeover! But still busy! |
