No, not a recent find, but one worth reporting. Well over 30 years ago "Jack" and a collecting buddy found two glass blocks on original wooden side pin brackets mounted to an Elm tree in Addison, VT. They each removed and kept one block. An attempt was made to remove the side bracket that held Jack's block, but it was severely damaged and left behind. No attempt was made at that time to remove the second bracket. Some years later Jack attempted to once again locate the Elm tree with the lone bracket, which he did. He gently removed this side bracket in one piece and placed it in his collection. Only one thing was wrong...his buddy had the original glass block that went with the side bracket in Jack's collection. Some time later, Jack purchased his buddy's collection, and the original glass block was once again reunited with its proper side bracket! Fast-forwarding to 2011, Jack sells his collection, and this rare specimen now resides in a California collection. Based on early drawings, a flat wooden cap was originally installed on the top to hold the glass block in place, but was not present on either bracket when they were discovered in the 1970s. How many original side brackets with glass blocks exist in the hobby, much less with a CD 1003 block? This is the first I recall seeing, so drop me a note if you have one or know of any others (I know there are at least 2-3 western Pacific Pottery blocks in brackets out there). |
