In the almost three years I've been collecting I've been to many many sales and antique shops. I haven't once run across anything even remotely interesting or worth more than $10. Today my luck changed. I saw a garage sale ad that listed "green, clear and purple glass insulators". Hmm. That sounded like it had possibilities. So, I'm sitting at work, it's 8:30, this sale starts at 9:00 and it's 50 miles away. That's a bit of a hike to take on a chance, and there was no number to call, but if I was going to go, I had to move soon. I skipped out on a couple hours of work and took the chance. Here's what I came back to the office with: Two Brookie 126.3 CREBs in great shape. A Brookie CREB beehive with bold and crisp embossing, a nice bubble on the back, potstones, and 4 perfect vent teats on the inner skirt that are long, thin, sharp and completely intact. An H.G.CO "J" mold in what appears to be a light cornflower blue (I'll see it better when the soot's off) with just a couple of pinky flakes. Another H.G.CO. "J" mold, this one in light purple, unfortunately with two huge base-whack arc bruises, one on front, one on back. Bummer. A PAT. DEC 19, 1871 CD 132 [010] bullet in ice green, the only real issue being a BB-size fisheye on the front crown. It also has some great fold lines on the back and a 1.25" x 1/4" bubble wrapped around the threads. Neat piece, and my first bullet of any sort. And, a Brookfield-made spiral in green aqua with some decent amber in it. Some of them may be for sale soon. First, though, they're going on a weekend retreat with Mr. Lye. He'll whip 'em into shape. Oh, I paid $1.50 for each of them. Plus about $15 in gas. |
