Los Angeles Vicinity, Frazier, KPF Switches, August 1966

Photo taken near the Superion Freeway Exit. Note the KPF "side-winder" primary switches in the background. These were made in the San Francisco vicinity (San Jose, I believe) and were a staple item for primary and subtransmission lines among electric utility systems in the LA Basin. A great many are still in service there. These interesting switches also were used in other parts of the country as well, including the New England Power System (now National Grid). The latter utilized post insulators as horizontal deadends for their switches opposed to employing suspension insulators for this purpose. New England Electric was installing them up until the early 1980s and a number are still "in the air".
