A close up of the same type rocker switch set in my previous PGE switch photo. This one was acquired from the PGE surplus store some years back for our railway museum power line. It was made by Pacific Electric Co. in San Francisco. The insulators on it are marked Locke 1937 which tells the approximate date of the set. The closest size listed multiparts the insulators on it resemble are M-2328. But metal cap switch insulators are not listed with M numbers of any kind. The pole mounted rod has a handle (usually locked in service) and when pulled down activates a 'bell crank' which throws the horizontal rod on the crossarm, opening or closing all 3 switches simultaneously. This provides a clean break when opening a 3 phase line under load. The 'arcing' horns sticking up extinguish the arc using the "Jacob's Ladder" effect. Another style similar to this is the 'twister' switch. To see one of these, click NEXT.
