This old pole is on 7th street in my hometown, Garibaldi, on the Oregon coast. The pole is definately one of the few remaining "predecessor poles" in town. This means that it was not originally owned by the power utility here now, Tillamook P.U.D., a utility district. It was originally owned by Mountain States Power Co. and new in the early 1950's before that company was bought by Pacific Power & Light in 1954. In 1961 the utility district became the only power service in the county and this pole was around 10 years old. The power line was always 3 phase and serves City Hall and a few adjacent houses. In the MSP days the line was 2300 volts and this pole would have had 3 brown porcelain signal insulators on the arm. Likely Westinghouse U-284's. And an old type transformer with side entrance wire bushings etc. Secondary lines to customers were 3 individual wires and from a 3 spool rack with a white neutral spool. TPUD had to make obvious changes to the pole in later years when the voltage was stepped way up to 14.400/25000. The line is now an open Y to 2 transformers at City Hall. Visible changes are 2 NGK skytone 3 skirt insulators, a large skytone S&C fuse cutout mounted on the line crossarm (rare)! And a rusty RTE (Rust 'Til Eternity)) transformer. The transformer is mounted on the exact front of the pole which is original. TPUD mounts the cans at an angle, in case one more is added later. The neutral wire on the original crossarm is still tied to a remaining brown mud MSP signal insulator. Lastly, the pole is undersized according to the current utility standards. But I hope it lasts forever! Click NEXT to see a close up and the next old pole at the street corner. |
