I just picked this piece up on a hunt on the original Niagara Buffalo line a few weeks ago. This line is perhaps the most famous historic power line in all of North America. This insulator still needs a bit of repair work but it is not to bad . even with it's damage, Just having an insulator I actually found myself on the line is beyond words... exciting (!!!) Back in the early 1990's, Ken Willick found 6 to10 specimens of this insulator but as far as I know no more have turned up since then. I walked the line with Ken around 1998 and did not find more then. Unfortunately most of the line runs through developed areas and additionally, much of the line has high pressure gas mains buried along the rout which destroyed most all evidence of the historic wood pole lines and insulators. The insulators Ken found were likely unearthed when the gas manes were laid but subsequent grading pretty much obliterated the line. I believe Ken found both Thomas and Imperial specimens along with at least one "Electrose" compost specimen I found a few damaged Thomas specimens as well. No white U-937's were found on the line as it appears they were all replaced with this type of insulator around 1902-1904. |
