A photo taken circa 1912 of a Portland Railway Light & Power Co. train stopped in the Sellwood district of Portland, OR. The crew of the electric engine, some officials, and passengers are posed beside the train. This train is one of many "picnic trains" the were extremely popular at the time. People in the city packed these trains regularly on weekends, to venture 40 miles out of town to get away and have a picnic, enjoy the many rivers, scenery and recreation areas at the end of the lines. I count 10 open air cars, with people packed in like cattle aboard just this train alone, they ran all day long! There were very few automobiles then, so this was the way to go! By the mid 1920's, these trains were a thing of the past and people drove their autos to the same spots, just as they do today. Ask yourself which method is 'greener'!
