Bright's Patent Insulator

1858 British patent by Sir Charles Tilston Bright. The insulator could be made in glass or earthenware. A guard or cover could be screwed down on the threads to protect the insulator from breakage. The cover could be made of wood, leather, gutta percha, or vulcanite (rubber).
